The world's oldest bear passes away

Last week I published an article about one of NY's oldest bears, and in the article I mentioned black bear #56 that has been studied by Minnesota Department of Natural Resources biologist Karen Noyce for over 3 decades. This bear was first captured in 1981 at the age of 7, and she was accompanied by 3 cubs.

Last night I was sent a link to an article detailing the death of #56. She was found dead and partially decomposed in the Minnesota wilderness, having apparently died of natural causes.

I wanted to share her story, as it is amazing for a wild animal, especially a highly sought after big game species, to live such a long and natural life.

#56's teeth were failing, but she appeared to be foraging well for herself, and was found outside her home range which surprised Noyce, but appeared to be resting in a comfortable shady spot when she passed.

This story amazes me, and I hope you take the time to read about her a bit more in depth.

  1. What an amazing old girl, and to die in a shady spot, chosen by her no doubt, a wonderful end to her long life. She must have had huge stamina to last so long, maybe the clean air, no pesticides, peaceful and quiet woody areas all helped. So good she was found, will they do a memorial plaque? Greetings from Jean.
