Alyssa on Aqua Kids in Alaska!

Well, the time has come to share this hilarious video with the world!

Back in July 2012, I was interning through the Student Conservation Association for the US Fish and Wildlife Service in the Kenai Field Office.

That's a mouthful.

I lived in Alaska for 3 months. Yeah, I know...it was amazing!

A perk of the job, was that when a children's TV show came down to spend the day with us, I got to explain my internship on camera to be shared with children far and wide. It was a hectic day, hilarious, stressful, unnerving, but fun. To see the back story, check out my blog entry: Aqua Kids in Alaska!

Aqua Kids in Alaska!

At the very end of July, I was afforded a really fun opportunity. A children's television cast and crew came to the Funny River Weir to film us and learn about the project! The Aqua Kids travel the country filming about awesome aquatic and marine research going on, and present in a way that's appealing to kids. I think their target demographic was the "tweens".

My boss, Ken, told me that morning that he wanted me to do the talking. I was flattered of course, because that meant he trusted me to represent the Service well, the office, him, and myself...and I that knew what I was talking about.

The day was, of course, overcast and threatening rain. I think the previous WEEK of weather was blue skies and sunny, so of course according to Murphy's Law, the day we'd have filming equipment in the field, it would be wet out. When we got to the location, we were briefed on the process, topics of questions, ways to stand, answer questions, "never look at the camera!", getting microphones hooked up, sound checks, lighting checks, etc. It was a bit intimidating, but really neat to watch.

A "brief" update...

've been writing a lot about all of the cool things I've been getting to do this summer in Alaska, but there are a couple of things that I've been wanting to post about. I just haven't had room in any of the other entries!

This may be a bit lengthy, and few (if any) pictures. Apologies in advance...

First, I wanted to discuss this "perfect storm" of events that has hit the Kenai Peninsula, which has closed the sport fishing on the rivers. Alaska, and most specifically, the Kenai Peninsula, has relied on sport fishing for local subsistence, and then tourists dollars to support it's people and the economy. Every summer probably tens of thousands, or more, flock to the Kenai for the amazing salmon and trout fishing. If you've ever seen a picture like this:

 ...it's probably been taken where I live this summer. People will stand shoulder to shoulder, and anchor boats gunwale to stern to bow for as far as the river allows to catch their trophy fish.

Over the past...10, 20, X amount of years, commercial fishing in the ocean has almost depleted the salmon stock. It's impossible for many to imagine, since they've seen MILLIONS of fish migrate upstream year after year. What many may know, but don't make the connection to, is that these fish that spawn upstream: die. As soon as the eggs are laid and fertilized, both males and females are literally exhausted and starved and die. It's a suicide mission with good intent. These fish make the trip hundreds or thousands of miles round trip from birthing grounds to ocean, and then BACK again to the same spot, years later. It's amazing to me, as it has been to many others. I'm sure there are books, articles, literature all published on this phenomenon for more reading if you're interested.

Anyway, for any angler reading this right now, or hunter for that matter, you're well aware of all the regulation surrounding taking game- whether it be fish, bird, mammal...and apparently some amphibians (in NY, maybe other places too?,) that are considered game species. They have to be a certain age, size, sex, in a certain area, during a certain time of year, etc etc etc. It can be frustrating, but I would gander that more are willing and do comply, than not.

[I hope I'm not going too off base here, this is what I've learned from the biologists here...]

Commercial fishing outfits have very few regulations like the regs that I mentioned above. They use huge nets and drag the ocean, catching anything that's unlucky enough to be in it's path. Endangered species, untargeted species, big fish, little fish...everything. And there's no being picky either, so everything they pull in: dies. This has been a sore point for many activists over the years, and I can understand why. I've seen pictures here of "the catch", it's disgusting AND, as I've discovered, completely unsustainable.

The age class of salmon that should be coming back right now, specifically king or Chinook salmon, just isn't. Major portions of the Kenai River has been closed to sport fishing, and this is the primo salmon fishing time of the year. Thousands of anglers flock here specifically to fish for these salmon, and I see parking lots full of RVs, campgrounds full of tents- and these people made the trek for nothing. I said that the other day to a guy on the refuge trail crew, and he said "Well they can always go hiking, or something else...it's not a total lossof a vacation", and while I guess that's true- there are many people who come here specifically for salmon fishing. And if you've had the trip planned for months, like my family would have, there would be major disappointment and financial loss. And those are just the tourists!

What about the people trying to make a living off of this natural phenomena? All of the hotel owners, restaurant owners, B&B owners, and mostly the fishing guides! I've heard that guides can and do make upwards of $1,000 a DAY, 6 days a week. And since the fishery has been closed since July 1st and a reopen nowhere near in sight, they are losing major dollars. Some of these people make their yearly income in just a few months, so they totally rely on the tourists to come and fish. It's devastating.

For those of you in NY, this is a lame comparison...but imagine if the Adirondack Park closed all of it's campgrounds for the summer. With nowhere to stay, the tourists wouldn't come, no business...crippling side effects.

The second part of the perfect storm, that's kind of subsided now, is the amount of water making it's way through the river system. The Kenai Peninsula apparently had record amounts of snow fall this winter season, which is still quite evident up in the mountains. In early-mid June there were quite a few nice, sunny, mild days (which was melting all of that pack), and then mild, torrential rainfall (which also melted the pack). The rivers were swollen, swift, and resembled chocolate milk. The few fish that were making it upstream from the ocean, had to combat the current and turbidity.

I didn't quite understand the scope of this problem, until I started asking questions of the biologists. I also visited the local watering hole last weekend and struck up a conversation with some locals. When they found out who I work for (US Fish & Wildlife Service), they started peppering me with questions about the fish. The USFWS often gets confused with the AK Dept of Fish & Game (ADF&G), as the names are so similar, we "do" many of the same types of things, and just to make things worse- the offices are next to each other on the strip here in town. These guys were guides, and were telling me their side. Luckily, it all stayed pretty amiable. When I retold this story to the biologists in the office, they told me to NEVER tell people where I work, especially at a bar. The natural resources are such an important part of life here, that people get very hot about it, and can/will take it out on the wrong people. I kept telling them that I was a lowly intern from NY. I had the same information that they were receiving (ADF&G makes the calls anyway, NOT FWS), and I had no perspective to commiserate with them. This is my first experience here, and I'm disappointed in the lack of fish for selfish reasons, I want to see the craziness of Combat Fishing like in the above picture!


Ok, that's enough I think. This was just such a huge part of my experience here that I had to document it. My poor field journal has gone by the wayside (as it always does...horrible journal-er), so the blog was it.

The other thing I wanted to share were my species lists! I'm getting there :) I've decided to keep track of the easiest three: birds, mammals, fish.

A Lesson: Aging Fish Scales

Earlier this week we had a very rainy, miserable day, and temps barely topped 50 degrees. After going out the the Funny River to check the weir, and getting thoroughly soaked, I was offered the chance to sit in the office for the rest of the afternoon and learn to age fish scales. I jumped at this, not just to get out of the weather, but because I'm interested in checking out scales a bit closer.

In the Wetland Mammals class I took a couple of years ago, we found otter scat and rinsed it out so that we just had the hard bits left over. We attempted to ID the species of fish that the otter had been eating by looking at the scales. It's tedious and difficult...and as I remember, we were not successful in IDing the species.

Anyway, when I had the chance to do this again,  I was interested to actually LEARN what I'm looking at rather than just trying to compare an itty-bitty scale to a picture in a book.

I got kind of a crash course in aging scales, but this paper is very comprehensive. If you're a Fish Head, you should read it. Not only comprehesive, but written fairly "layman", so it's easy to understand. Sometimes these things are written with ONLY peers in mind, and that's not always the audience.

This is a scale card. It's kind of sticky once it gets wet, and the scales stick to it pretty well. The way it's organized is from right to left, top to bottom. SO, fish #1 that we sample goes from 1 down to 31. We take 4 scales/fish. Not sure WHY it's done this way, there's got to be a reason. Seems too odd to not have a reason. These were not the scales I would be learning to age from though. These still needed to be pressed into acetate making a permanent, hard record of the scales.

The scales I was to abe ging were in these little envelopes.

Not sure how many are in here...but way more than is considered "fun"...Also, the scales in these envelopes are no where near the size on the above card. Those scales, to give a frame of reference, are like the size of a pencil eraser. Below are the size of the scales I was working with.

Can you see them? I circled them because otherwise I don't think you'd be able to see them. They are tiny, and also very silvery/translucent. These scales came from coho and chinook smolts, which were probably finger-length, if that. And I realize that you probably can't see the scales too well, but I didn't want to write this post without sharing HOW small they are.

So what I was looking for was to determine if these fish were "0" in age (hatched that year, haven't had a chance to add a annuli ring), or a "1" year old in age (between 1 full year and 2 years of age). All of those rings you see above are not annuli, but circuli. Annuli rings are added on after a year, and are a bit more pronounced than the others. The image above points this out with an arrow, although to me, they all look the same in these drawings. Actually looking at the scales under the dissection scope seemed (or maybe I thought I was doing better than I actually was...) to be easier to pick out.

All of these fish have yet to live in salt water, they've just been hanging out in the rocks and vegetation eating inverts and growing.  At the same time of the scales being taken, they were also implanted with a PIT tag.

Q. What is a PIT tag?
A.A Passive Integrated Transponder tag is a radio frequency device that transmits a unique individual code to a reader where it is displayed in a numeric or alphanumeric form. The tag has no internal battery, hence the term “passive". The reader powers or excites the tag circuitry by radio frequency induction and receives the code back from the tag. Radio frequency identification does not require line of sight, tags can be read as long as they are within the range of a reader.

I'd speak more on that above, if I had enough information to explain with. Simply, I assume half of you that are reading have worked with these tags in the field, and need little explanation. The other half of you, you know those little microchips your vet can put in the cat/dog? Same thing! The tag is actually about the size of a grain of rice- it's very, very small.

I may have the opportunity to implant some in fish later this season, and of course if that happens I'll be sure to share.
And this is the data sheet I was recording the ages on. That length is in milimeters, just to give you an idea. Above I said finger-length and 91mm is long, but that was one of the larger fish that I recorded.

I sat here for 3 hours or so, staring at these little scales, through a microscope. When I walked out of work that day, I could barely see straight. I've always had an issue looking through binoculars and microscopes, even though I have 20/20 vision. I'm not sure if that's me misusing the equipment or truly having an issue. Regardless, it was interesting to do, just will remember to take breaks next time.

I have a few blog entries in mind to write soon, and I wanted to share a picture of what was going on outside my window as I was writing this. I would like to write a full entry on these guys eventually.

Salmonid Sampling: Round #1

Today I finally got to handle fish! This is what I love most about the field: hands on, up close and personal with the animals, that allows me appreciation of the species. That's what zoos are all about really, bringing exotic and native wild animals into your community to offer you the chance to fall in love with them and perhaps help conservation efforts. Except I'm going into THEIR community and learning about them.

Last night Jeff, my supervisor, went to the Funny River where the weir is set up, click that link for the pre-story. He closed the front of the trap, upstream, and then closed the fike (see below).



The fike allows fish to swim in, but makes it difficult for them to swim back out.

The black plastic are called "cod fingers". Don't know why, but there's some fun trivia for you!

It reminded me of the Montezuma Confusion Traps that we saw when duck banding this spring with the USFWS on Cayuga Lake.

All of those fingers do close, they just got bumped into a bit while I was in there...wrangling.








So Jeff and I climbed in, he handed me this HUGE net and said...go for it.

This is Jeff, but you can see how small inside the trap is, and how big that net is. I'll let you in on a secret too: there are 34 large chinook salmon in there with us.

Once a fish is in the net, it's "FISH ON" as Jeremy Wade (River Monsters) would say. It's like a bull in a china shop, a bucking bronco, a tasmanian devil....the fish flip out and try to get out of the net, and meanwhile you're crashing around trying to fight the current, tripping over the other fish, and trying to get the fish turned around into the cradle.

So here I am with a chinook. The cradle is to the left, and that's where we hold the fish while processing it. It keeps them still, confined, and in the water.

Here's the cradle in use. Along my side, on the outside is a ruler that allows us to take 2 measurements: snout to fork in the tail, and mid-eye to fork in the tail.


Also, I have to comment on what I'm wearing. It's a dry suit, but feels like a huge zip-loc bag, and looks like a space suit with rubberbands around the wrists and neck. It's kind of uncomfortable, but I much prefer it to the 45*F water!

After measuring, we'd take a scale sample. The ideal spot is between the posterior of the dorsal fin, to the posterior of the anal fins, and above the lateral line. These scales form first, and are the "oldest" on the fish, so we pulled from here.

The scales were then placed on this "gum card" that gets sticky with water activation. Four scales/fish were taken, starting at #1 and running to 11, 21, 31. The second fish gets #2, 12, 22, 32...and so on. It's backwards, and I don't understand why it's setup this way...BUT that's the way it goes.

Afterwards, the cards are dried and pressed flat and eventually someone who has been trained, makes an acetate copy of it (kind of like using superglue when lifting finger prints..it makes the print/scale ridges rigid and more permanent), then the scales are aged.


Finally, when all data is collected, the fish is lifted in the cradle out of the trap and released back into the stream.

It was a great day! The chinook are really running now, I think we processed 34 fish today...which is remarkable. Last week this time we had MAYBE 2-3 fish coming through the weir in a 24 hour period. The trap was only set for 12 hours. This fish above was 100cm long, and about 50#. He was the last fish I caught...and it was like netting Jaws. He was a big boy!

The Funny River Weir Project

Since I arrived in Alaska almost 3 weeks ago, all I've been posting are pictures and stories of what I've been up to in my off time. I finally this week have begun to actually WORK! I had to sit through alot of orientation and policy talk, and training workshops. This past weekend I worked a festival here in the town of Soldotna that celebrated the mighty Kenai River. The Kenai is physically and economically the center of this peninsula. It provides revenue from tourists and fish as food for the local residents year round.

The movements and numbers of fish traveling the Kenai have been closely documented by the Fish and Wildlife Field Office biologists. The fish are such an important part of Alaska's economy, that big money is spent to learn about their habits so that practical laws and regulations can be put into action. It's called a "sustainable wild fishery".

There are multiple monitoring projects going on out of the office I work for, probably 2/3 of them are considered "remote". Only access is by float plane, or helicopter if water is too low to land on. The helicopter will literally drop a sling load on an exposed gravel bar, drop the staff off, and then they'll have to hike to their field camp and drive back with the boat.  I will be working on local projects, and to give you a taste of what that is, I'm going to explain what a weir is and how it works!

The Funny River, no idea where that name came from, is a tributary of the Kenai River. It's accessible to us, the Fish and Wildlife Service, by a private land owner. This man "homesteaded" his property...meaning back in the 50's when AK was becoming a state, he claimed his chunk of land and said it was his. It's a great cooperative project between a private citizen and a government agency.

This is what the Funny River weir looks like:


It's basically a PVC pipe fence that blocks fish from freely swimming upstream, while allowing water through. It angles at about 45* and is anchored upstream by sandbags. In the center, if you can make it out, is a tunnel that fish are channeled into. The big cage is a trap that is open at the time of this picture, but can be closed so that fish can be easily captured to take biological samples and measurements, and then released. And finally beyond that, which you can't see, at the base of the pole is the video box.

A closer look at the weir- daily I will be coming to this location and wading hip deep in the river to rake off the debris that gets caught up on the weir. This was taken on Wednesday the 13th, and today the 14th I couldn't see the PVC. We had about a day and a half of steady rain and the river rose a foot. It was pretty scary this morning wading out into that water!

This is the housing of the video equipment. In years past, and maybe even on some of the weirs that are in operation now, someone would have to sit on top of the trap and watch as fish passed below. They would have a thing in their lap that they'd tick on to keep track of species and sex of passing fish. This was done from above, in all weather, and whether or not fish were passing. The team has this ingenious system set up of a video surveillance system. It's like camera trapping on speed! The camera is a regular security camera that you could buy for your house, and it's motion sensored. There is a water proof housing and light system that it's all rigged up with to keep it safe and well lit. It records if something (fish, debris, beaver, etc) swim upstream under the weir, through the tunnel, through the trap, and through the video box. The fish have to go this route, all other paths are blocked to get up stream. THEN, in the software you can search by day and then by hour for a "blip" in the recording, and then you view it from the comfort of your office or whereever.


This is MY office for the summer :) It's a "weatherport", basically just a heavy plastic tent up on a platform. All the video recording equipment is housed here...and after I check the weir for any debris or faults, I sit in here and review the tapes. I'm able to fast forward, pause, and consult my Pacific Salmon ID cheat sheet :)

This is what the video software looks like...that gray area is a live view of the river. Nothing is swimming through at this moment, and the water is REALLY turbid due to recent rain events and warm of the glaciers (melt water). When we get some good footage I'll try to post some. It's really cool!

I'll be posting more about this all summer, as well as other projects I am involved with. Tomorrow I'm going to an elementary school and doing fish dissections with k-4 on pink salmon! It should be a good time.
